Niko Matawalu beats Stuart Hogg in footrace to deny him a hat-trick

Knowing the Scottish reputation for being "parsimonious" he was doing Hogg a favour. Would have cost him a jug for a hat trick but this way he can't even be done for jug avoidance!!

Midweek Madness - Referee inspects the bottom of a ruck

Sometimes you learn the hard way. In my first year on the Referee's Society, having retired from playing, I did a Vets (35 plus) game involving 2 clubs I used to play against. Having ignored the "feedback" from the Front rows that I was standing too close when showing the mark at a Scrum, I found myself bound in between the two front rows when they engaged. My only excuse... I used to paly full back and had no idea about scummaging. Many would argue I still don't but that's another story!!

How dangerous are concussions in Rugby?

A fascinating, disturbing article. Firstly, a big thankyou to Steve Devine for the frank and honest way in which he described his history of injury and the effect it has had on his life. In the Professional era, players are getting bigger and are better conditioned physically but one thing you cannot do is grow a thicker skull to absorb more knocks! Players are stronger and faster and that means, by definition, that the head collisions are going to be more traumatic. It is not only the elite players who are suffering but also players at all levels.
Of special concern to me is the effect on young players. I was struck (no pun intended) by the comment of the father of the boy who sustained an injury playing Aussie rules... miss the rest of the season and if he gets three concussions.. hang up his boots. When I was 16 I sustained a serious head injury and I was unconcious for 20 hours. Just six weeks later, I was back playing Rugby. A number of concussions later... I am beginning to wonder?
Finally, I have to agree with Pretzel's comment.. Why bugger about with trials.. and how many other serious, life long injuries will be caused whilst the trial is being conducted. Thanks for a most thought provoking and worrying article.

Classic Encounters - Madagascar host Namibia in epic high scoring battle

Rugbydump, thank you so much for posting this. Must agree with "Besthookers" comment that I would love to see more of that; any chance of posting more of the tournament??

Namibia must be wondering what on earth happened? They have been a regular at RWC for a number of cycles and have never looked out of place. However, some of the Madegascan Rugby was sublime; if you didn't know it was a French Colony at one time, you could have guessed by some of the slight of hand and some terrific running lines.

I have been a lover of our great game for more than 50 years. At times I have been somewhat critical of some of the "professional attitudes" that have crept into the game. That short clip has been the perfect antidote for an old cynic... terrific rugby being played by countries way down the rankings... more please!!!

Referee Nigel Owens - 'This is not Soccer'

Well said Nigel Owens! Get the feeling that at least one player got the message and will not forget it; perhaps a few of Nigel's colleagues could borrow the same phrase!
