the introduction on these pitches actually could be a very good thing for English Rugby allowing teams to play good running rugby year round. We play on this type of pitch every week here in Hong Kong without incident. In fact people complain if we have to use one of the two turf pitches because they are much harder than the artificial ones.
There is also no issue with the bounce of the ball, they take a full stud and cause no problems when scrummaging. They are also fine to play on when its hot (the first few games we played this season it was 36 degrees) and are nothing like those old astro turf carpets that used to give out those nice burns. The only downside is its true those little black rubber bits get everywhere but I'll take that over never having to clean my boots!

Oh how I yearn for days of old where wispy French half backs were laughed at when they got stuck on their arses by scrappy Welsh scrum-halves who then received a congratulatory pat on the back from a teammate.
Was what occurred dangerous - no. Was it a silly thing to do well given the "Laws" as they now stand and how they are interpreted - probably yes.
To be honest the most grating thing about the whole incident is the Montpellier forwards making such a meal of it when every one of them would have known Paillaugue was absolutely fine. Definitely an element of Soccer culture creeping in!

Red Card? In my opinion no but I've had my opinion clouded by several decades where a hit like this wouldn't have raised an eyebrow let alone a red card. That said Ref's can and do get decisions wrong the worrying thing is the citing commission have ratified his decision with the 5 week ban.
Before the IRB ends up with a sanitised version of the game nobody wants to watch or play I think they should consult the players themselves as to what they think should and shouldn't be allowed. Clearly current England International James Haskell doesn't have a problem with this tackle and responds accordingly by pointing out on twitter running into Hala'ufia isn't something he'd advise.
@Eliota_Sapolu what a hit, reminds me never to run at him. Only looks bad because a bigger man hit a smaller man, when 2 opposites collide.

Have tip or spear tackles always been an instant red card offence and has anybody got any stats on the number of serious injuries resulting from tip or spear tackles as opposed to regulare "legal" mean's of tackling?
Personally I think tip tackles should be a penalty or yellow for a repeat offence and spear tackles a red. The ban's being imposed are too long. inconsistant with other offences and don't reflect the spirity of rugby.
