I found the topic very interesting. I myself wear a head guard as it does provide some cushioning from head on head collisions (or head on anything else), but that is more down the route of 'splits and cuts and general bangs' rather than anything inside my head. But mainly it's due to protecting against the old Cauli's! However when I'm playing flanker, I prefer to play without the scrum cap, as I find it's more restrictive to hearing etc... »
Don't get me wrong, he deserved punishment due to the fact it was after the whistle - penalty or even a yellow, but then again, Smit had no need to push Thorns head down, so in some ways I'd be inclined to penalise Smit, then reverse it for Thorns retaliation... the actual movements and end result were sort of a non event - as impressive as it was!
