Rob Simmons escapes on-field punshment for dangerous tackle on Yannick Nyanga

I didn't ever hear the ref ask Moore (the acting captain) for the number of the offending player, or address the Aussie team for the offending player to step forward - he only seems to ask the assistant refs and act on the information (or lack thereof) he receives from them. I've had that happen before, where the ref has asked the captain to bring the player forward.

I'm also not sure the tackle warrants the vilification Simmons is getting from a lot of the posts. It's clumsy yes, but the player lands squarely on his back (not his head) and Simmons goes to ground with him (vs. dumping/dropping him). Re. the "lateness" of it, he also had no idea the ball was long gone. I've seen a lot worse get a lot less than what the hordes are screaming for here.

All Black Adam Thomson's boot on Alasdair Strokosch's head

I stand corrected, thanks. However I still thought refs had guidelines, i.e. offence x = penalty y?

Mistake? It was only a mistake if he mistook the guy's scrum cap for the ball. Thomson knew exactly where he was putting his boot. And it doesn't make a difference if the guy was all over the ball, you just can't ruck like you did in the good ol' days.

I might have to reach for the rule book, but I thought rucking to the head (intentional or not) was an automatic red card? At least it used to be - I got done for that one myself once.

Elvis Vermeulen yellow carded for huge hit on Zee Ngwenya

Can't see anything wrong with that - don't think he was taken in the air, by my reckoning (admittedly, the video's a little grainy...) his foot had just touched the ground when the hit came in. Game on!

Scott Higginbotham cited twice for knee and head-butt on Richie McCaw

That's right, I'm not simple!! ;)

Really stupid, idiotic thing for Higginbotham to do. And unnecessary too - the Wallabies were doing a decent job during the game to not let the ABs get away with their normal crap around the breakdown, and the ref was on to their/McCaw's shenanigans too. He should have kept it clean and legal and let it be whistled in their favour.

I do however find the Kiwi reaction to this kind of stuff pretty amusing. Hansen's comments aside, an NZ newspaper called for an eight-week ban to "protect the best player in the game [from] being battered by hackers and lugs with barely half his ability''. They talk about poor little Richie like he's some national treasure who needs special protection. Come on Kiwis... McCaw's a big boy, he knows exactly what he's doing out there and how much he pushes the boundaries. Usually he gets (legally) pummeled by the opposition for doing what he does, I don't have any problem with that and I'm sure he doesn't either.

The Wallabies hold on for victory over Argentina in Rosario

Gutsy win by the Aussies, really positive to see them battle out a win with their backs to the proverbial wall.

Bryan Habana hat-trick sinks the wounded Wallabies in Pretoria

So they could have subbed Alexander back on (I think he had already been on the field, right?), but could not have brought on Fainga'a off the bench to replace Polota-Nau? All very confusing - now where's my rule book...

What an absolute clusterf*ck from the Aussies, everything seemed to go wrong. Headless chooks in attack with no semblance of a game plan, with guys like Dom Shipperley proving yet again that they aren't worthy of the gold jersey, too much ball given up through excellent Springboks counter-rucking, and pretty soft all round (surprisingly, the Wallabies scrum notwithstanding). AAC proved himself yet again to be the class he is, putting his body on the line to stop a certain five-pointer - the guy's a legend.

There hasn't been much chat about the ref's decision to not allow the sub onto the field and forcing the Aussies to play 14 on 15 (however endlessly amusing it was to see tubby Ben Robinson toss in the lineouts). I'm not sure of the ruling on this one, if they had used up their subs should they have still been allowed to make it for a front-rower?
