Captain calls for referee to review opponent's foul play, gets teammate sent off

The Stormers narrowly beat the Cheetahs 40-34 in a tightly-fought Super Rugby match last weekend in Bloemfontein. Cheslin Kolbe bagged himself a hat-trick but it will be the utterly bizarre finish that is perhaps remembered the most as Cheetahs captain François Venter inadvertently got his teammate sent off.

A fractious game had already produced three yellow cards and in the final play of the game, more scuffles broke out between forwards of both sides, with Rynardt Elstadt and Henco Venter exchanging blows to the face and seeing red after a TMO referral.

Keen to look after his player, Captain Venter asked referee Jaco van Heerden to review the final minute incident in which the Cheetahs flanker claimed he had been punched.

What followed were straight red cards for both Elstadt and Venter after video replays highlighted Venter as the initiator of the fight, with an elbow to the face of Elstadt.

Probably not the result what François was aiming for but it was ultimately the correct decision from Van Heerden, even if he needed some convincing from the TMO and sideline small screen.

Both players have since been banned for a week each, for infringing Law 10.4(a).
