Midweek Madness - Opeti Fonua puts referee Cedric Marchat on his backside

In the French Top 14 a few weeks back referee Cedric Marchat found himself on the receiving end of a charge from Agen's Tongan giant Opeti Fonua, who reportedly weighs in at a mammoth 135kg, and is 6ft6. Marchat survived.

If that wasn't enough of a blow, the diminutive referee ended up under a pile of bodies before being spat out the other end. He looked pretty shaken afterwards, but with a smile on his face, seemed more concerned about his broken whistle than his personal well being.

If you're a regular on the site you'll note that this certainly isn't the first time a ref has tasted the turf, only to have it shared on here with everyone. It's one of those things that players, and fans, find great amusement in for some reason or another.

It's happening quite a lot lately too, or we're just noticing it more, but if you happen to see an incident of a ref taking a knock or ending up on his backside in a funny way, give us a shout via twitter, facebook, or email and we'll check it out and possibly feature it.

There are many ref clips archived on RD, so have a look through the Related Posts below for more

If you didn't read the intro you'd be forgiven for thinking this was another Ronan O'Gara tackle video.

With the refs becoming an even more 'integral' part of play and requiring to restart with scrums, perhaps it's time for the IRB to develop a new hand signal to depict why the scrum was given:- something to highlight the embarrassment ;)

On a slightly more serious point; when this occurs, it seems as though the refs struggle blow whistle to make the players aware of the situation etc. (and who can blame them with some of the clouts we have seen!), perhaps it would be an idea to give the touch judges a whistle, just to help the chap out!
