Scotland celebrate historic win over Wallabies with sickening head clash

Scotland claimed a famous 9-6 upset win over the Wallabies in Australia earlier today as Greig Laidlaw kicked an extra time penalty to spark wild celebrations. Unfortunately Joe Ansbro and Ally Strokosch will remember the moment for other reasons.

Scotland won in appalling conditions, similar to those that greeted the Wallabies in their 2009 meeting at Murrayfield, when Matt Giteau missed a last minute kick and Scotland won 9-8.

On this occasion it was a late kick from the Scots as their power in the scrum earned them a penalty. Laidlaw's attempt sailed through and Scotland had their first victory over the Wallabies in Australia since their 1982 win in Brisbane.

The scenes were chaotic as the kick went over, with the Scots erupting in the middle of the park, engulfing laidlaw and diving onto one another. Ansbro and Strokosch joined the group with impeccable timing, flying in head first, splitting each other open in the process.

It didn't stop the smiles, despite each player needing to be patched up, with Ansbro coming off worst, needing multiple stiches to a nasty cut above his eye.

Strokosch commented on Twitter that he had 'Apparently split him to the bone', and said that he got 4 stitches while Ansbro 'got loads!'. He also posted a comical freezeframe of the collision.

"We are hard in Scotland - this is how we celebrate," he said.

Below is a clip that includes the amusing reactions from both Australian and UK commentatry teams

Congratulations to the Jocks. Wooden spoon in the nations, 7 losses on the trot, away from home and against the (quite inexplicably) second ranked team in the world.

What was shocking was not the approach of Scotland (they don't play in many different ways) but the lack of a plan 'B' from Australia. No Giteau to unfairly blame this time either....

Anyway, congrats again to the Jocks

Indeed - we desperately needed a win. A confidence boost to the squad!

I think it's a a bit harsh in saying there was a lack of a plan B from Australia. Did you see the conditions? There was only 1 way to play in that wind and rain and both teams employed the same tactics - albeit the Aussies were slightly more adventurous. That being said, I think we'll see a much different Australian performance come Saturday against the Welsh.

I'm a Scot, and if the weather was different the result would probably have been in the Aussies favour. However, Andy Robinson has injected a more attacking mentality to the Scottish game. We haven't had the results, but the rugby has been much more encouraging to watch!

Nice one for 'What happens next'.

Well done to the Scotts. As a neutral it's nice to see the underdog win every once in a while.

Losing to scotland is horrible because they really suck the life out teams sometimes.
If australia play like that against wales they have no chance in hell. Our scrum will destroy them.

Great win by the Scots. OK, so Australia were without Beale, O'Connor and Horwill, yes, there were five new caps and yes the conditions were awful, but man a win is a win. I just hope Scotland can back this win with to more on the islands, although Samoa will take some stopping.

Let the internationals beegiiiinn

Great defence by Scotland, congratulations, deserved win.
Not surprised by the result, the Wallabies will be psyched for Wales, no excuses, and i'm putting my hard-earned on.

Congrats to the Scots. Not a game of sparkling highlights but it was intriguing to watch because of the conditions. For most of the second half I thought an Oz try was only a matter of time but the Scots' defence did the job. I thought the ref's decision to give a last minute penalty in front of the posts when he'd been letting collapses go all game was a surprise. Front row penalties always seem to be a lottery and in the extreme conditions I thought he'd done the right thing in being a bit lenient up to then. But I've got no problem with the result. Australia will need to be better against Wales, and the Scots are going to need all that defence in the islands, especially out wide.

Some really nice gracious-in-defeat comments from the Aussies on here. Good work.

Firstly, well done Scotland, nice to see them get a Win not just against a good team but against a good Southern Hemisphere team like Australia and after such a long string of defeats.

Secondly.. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA that looked like something out of a Laurel and Hardey film, I've played this vid 6 times now, still laughin :)

Typical backs and forwards reaction , Ansbro runs for the plastic surgeon and Strokosch gets taped up

jumped up scots after beating a aus side without; o conner, beale, quad cooper, horwill and several new caps as well as half strength side

The Scots were playing a youthful side too, missing Denton, Evans, Jones, Beattie, Morrison, Brown, Jacobson, Hamilton, Rory Lamont.

No doubt it wasnt a full strength side from Aus but Aus still have a wealth of players. n tbh in those conditions having Beale, o'conner n cooper would have still been extremely limited. I think on a dif day in dif conditions and with dif players the match would prob have gone the Aussies way.... but it didnt. So for that, Well done Jocks

I generally applaud the scottish team effort, but LMAO to see two sweaties open each other up in this way.

I think it's been so long since McJock has celebrated so frenziedly that they've forgotten the safety rules associated with the same

My mind went back to the 9 sticthes i was having in a eye wound at the moment big Gav missed that easy kick in 1991 -- aaaaahhhh memories fond memories !
