The Stormers vs Cheetahs chaos in Cape Town

The Stormers and the Cheetahs got into an almighty tangle at Newlands last weekend, resulting in two players receiving off-field yellow cards after the whole thing was put on a white card. There were some requests to have it featured, so here you go.

Ashley Johnson, who is off to London Wasps soon, and Stormers hooker Deon Fourie were both issued off-field yellow cards for their part in starting an ugly scrap that at one stage appeared to involve most players from either side.

While the punches weren't clear to see in the footage, both players were found guilty of starting the chaos, contravening Law 10.4(m): Acts contrary to good sportsmanship.

If you're still unsure, the off-field yellow card is issued for foul-play incidents that are very close to, but not quite, red card offences. It doesn't affect the next game at all (teams don't start with 14..), but it does go on their disciplinary record, as a normal yellow card would.

In this instance referee Steve Walsh consulted with assistant ref Jonathan Kaplan, who fell back on the white card for everyone, rather than picking out any players in particular. He did however mention an earlier incident, resulting in a yellow card, and a rather unhappy Stormers captain.

It's an intesting bit of footage as Walsh in action is always entertaining, as is the way Jean De Villiers basically said that a white card is a cop out. There's also a nice hit by Bryan Habana at the beginning of the clip.

The Stormers won the game 16-14, and you can view full highlights of the match here

can't see how that was worthy of a yellow, whether there was intent or not, the fact of the matter is that two other players were swinging punches right in front of the linesman.
surely that has more malice than the knee. Jacobs didn't even react to it.

Very harsh on 7 don't think it was intentional what so ever....But either way it was a terrible decision by linesman...If it was a deliberate knee then it's a red card surely?

Fight started by 2 blue...If there is any punishment it should go to him..Personally I don't really think any further action is required on either incident..

Thought the card was harsh but Stormers player was being a fool for even trying it. Walsh cracks me up, I actually think he is good in the fact that he is not overbearing on any players and often lets the game flow a bit more. As for the handbags its poor discipline but when everyone is involved then it is what it is, hope nothing comes of it.

I thought Walsh handled that as well as a ref can ever handle those types of incidents. No real instigator - let's get back to playing rugby and let the authorities take action afterwards.

Walsh cannot handle a game that has any kind of intensity. He tries so hard to be everybody’s mate that he’s completely toothless as a ref.

And Elstadt was very hard done by with this yellow. Imagine if every shove at the end of a ruck or tackle is greeted with a card. We’d have games ending with five or six a side.

Disagree on Walsh mate, although your rationale makes sense. I think his relaxed manner takes the heat out of that intensity. Look how everyone just chills out and calms down after his chat and friendly banter with the captains.

Very lame. Stormers #7 was just getting up. Refs are way way too keen to show cards. It doesn't need to be this way.

Few points:

- Still, can't for the life of me figure out why the white card is needed... Can someone please answer me this; Now in these matches does the citing commissioner look at the entire game or ONLY those incidents that are white carded?
- Yellow was ridiculous, I don't blame Walsh, he had to go on TJ recommendation, that was nothing, the 14 appealed to the TJ so perhaps that swayed him.
- Haven't got any issues with Steve Walsh, I thought he handled the situation surrounding the fight correctly, there was not much in it other than the fact it was ugly. I didn't pick out anything anyway. Last thing I like to see is players getting carded for handbags. Walsh went on the TJ recommendation for the yellow, can't fault him there. Personally I find his "want to be everyones friend" attitude perfectly acceptable. Everyone is here to enjoy the rugby, why can't he also enjoy it? He explained his decisions and I feel he handled it very well.

Totally agree with you on Steve Walsh - well put mate.

And this in RD'S write-up is classic: "Walsh in action is always entertaining". Spot on!

I reckon he must smoke a massive spliff before each game, because he is just so chilled out.

Pathetic and unprofessional. There is nothing tough about this stupid little boys acting like animals!

anyone see the fan with the umbrella behind the fight right at the end of this clip. Gets his hand on one of the stormers players and looks like he wants to hit people with it! Not too sure that would have been a great idea.

RD: Jean De Villiers basically said that a white card is a cop out. Quality. Very amusing, as it Walsh's conspiratorial shrug. Basically "Mate, I haven't got a bloody clue what happened so it's the best I can do".

RD: There's also a nice hit by Bryan Habana at the beginning of the clip.
That tackle was a beauty!

Would just like to echo the previous comments on here, thought Steve Walsh handled the instance extremely well and sets an example to all other refs dealing with these situations

Damn it, Walsh did handle that quite well. Now I can't hate him as much. Though I always have like his "let's just get on with the game" attitude.

He always just seems so full of himself. He knows the cameras on him and plays up to it. Maybe I'm getting old and grumpy but he does irritate me.

I would just like to know what the initial penalty was for, after that great tackle by Habana. Can anyone tell?

it was on Habana for "tackler not rolling away"

Pretty sure he played the ball on the ground also. You now have to get back to your feet after completing the tackle before you can compete for the ball. Cracking tackle though.

LOL. Check out the Stormers halfback in the last minute of the clip just watching the big boys brawl. Hands on his hips, no interest in protecting his mates; guess he's pretty used to staying out of it....

The card for 7 is sort of understandable. The TJ might not have thought it was intentional but at the end of the day, his knee went into someone's head. The two fellas who started fighting should have got yellows for punching the face but that will come up after the white card. If officials didnt see the original scuffle then theres not much that be done at the time.
