Jamie Roberts big tackle on Berrick Barnes & Gethin Jenkins clearing kick

Here's a short clip of two things that happened in the Wales vs Wallabies game at the Millennium Stadium on the weekend. Luckily, they both took place at the same time, making for two great moments that we're sharing with you today.

The first is of course the big shot that Jamie Roberts put in on Berrick Barnes early in the game. The meeting between the two had been spoken about beforehand and Roberts himself had said that Barnes might be a tricky customer to deal with.

Barnes is under 90kg's, but fearless to the point of having been knocked out so many times it actually threatened his future in the game. Roberts cited he and James O'Connor as two they'd need to keep their eyes on.

"We have made sure this week in defence we are ready to greet him and Berrick as well. Berrick had a terrific play-off game against us. Hopefully, we can give him a warm reception," Roberts said.

He did exactly that, welcoming him to Cardiff in just the third minute of the game.

A turnover followed as Gethin Jenkins - their fourth loose forward - dug in to snatch the ball then put in an almighty clearing kick. Great play all round, and a memorable moment from the game.

Gethin Jenkins has been one of the best props in the world for the last five or six years and is a great athlete. A pleasure to watch

Does the commentator call it a useful kick? Yes, he gains back posession when under pressure, but then simply gives a lineout to the Wallabies, barely gained territory and could have done more by passing the ball... Wales had more players on that side of the pitch.

*Groan* you're a bigger buzzkill than Buzz Killington, (and I don't mean the one who posts on here).

Barely gained territory? He took play from his own 22 to the opponent's ten...

Oh dear a forward kicking, looks like he will have to hand in his front row union membership card!

I like the way that the Aussie commentators are so ignorant as to who the Welsh players are they don't even notice that the touchfinder (also the name of a great band by the way) was kicked by a prop. Noteworthy I would have thought, it doesn't happen every day. Deariy me.

Don't worry the Aussie commentators can't even get their own players names right. Barnes did everything right by laying the ball back for his players, it was the soft tackle on Horwill and his "flop" over the Welsh side that caused the turnover.

Hence my point on the 2 tackling styles, 1 looks good (risks injury to tackler) but only lands the player among his own for an easier offload, while the softer tackle lays the player among the defenders. See RWC Aust.-- Barnes v Mcabe at 12.

Austin, no one knows who the welsh players are, after all, they are just one step up from the poms.

Looks a bit like a SonnyBill hit with no intent to wrap.. but if you can get away with it - what a nice way to welcome someone to your home turf.

Shame about the result.

@ Pipo, I suggest you watch the video again and check out the distance THE PROP makes when KICKING the ball. I'm sure Gethin doesn't spend too much time with the kicking coach so don't hate the player, hate the game!

It was a great effort and nice to see someone in the tight five using his brain rather than just trying to smash his way through. Hope England start to encourage sensible football now the new coaching staff are in place!

Jamie Roberts hit was good but it wasn't a great hit. For someone so big I always wonder why he doesn't attempt to hold the player up and force a turn over? Maybe he usually does and it's always over shadowed by these types of Hollywood Hits. A great player non the less.

In that situation I'd say "using his brain" would have been passing to Mike Phillips, who had two more backs outside him and no Aussie defender closer than ten metres to the touchline. It was a perfect counterattacking scenario.

A very good point. Just watched it again and in the final seconds of the clip, if you pause it, you can see exactly what you're saying. Massive overlap that probably would have lead to a score!!!! Only thing in his defence is that Phillips is back-peddling which may have put him off passing but still a great opportunity squandered.

Who does Gethin Jenkins think he is? Bloody running around the park, scoring tries and now this!? Prop putting foot to ball indeed. I just hope a suitable fine was handed down by the kangaroo court that evening!

*Buzzkill alert*: bit hard to tell from the video, but did the ball land in play? Looks suspiciously like it went out on the full to me and technically Jenkins took it back into his 22. Have to admit that the amusing sight of a prop nailing a very good touchfinder would have been even more entertaining if the lineout had been awarded where he kicked it.

Jenkins is a modern day prop forward, at school he played in the backrow and his PE teachers told him he'd do better at prop, as soon as he went to Pontypridd they switched him.

He is like having an extra backrow abd his srumaging is good (but not great).

This brings back memories from his kick against Fiji during the RWC, Leigh Halfpenny then chased, gathered and scored! He is an amazing prop, imho, one of the best in world rugby at the moment, glad to see the injuries have stopped!

Awesome play by one of the best props in the world. If you don't like clearing kicks in pressure situations, then it's not Gethins fault. It was a great kick, and gained aruond 40m possesion. And it is a bigger challenge to do so, if you are a prop and not used to do it. So pretty good work.

The tackle wasn't so great, bad technique with big collision.

Glorious from Gethin Jenkins! Any 7 would be proud of that turnover and any 10 would be proud of that clearance kick.

Great kick but pause the clip on 39s and count the overlap as pointed out by Hry above! Still a great kick though :)
