Northampton Saints crush Toulon - 3 of the best tries

Northampton Saints crush Toulon - 3 of the best tries

The Northampton Saints got their European Challenge Cup campaign off to a fantastic start on Thursday night in the south of France as they put 50 points on an understrength Toulon side that were simply never in the match.

The seven try victory announced their return to European action in a big way as they picked up a bonus point win, and a huge confidence boost going into their next round match against Montpellier.

Toulon fielded only one of their nine international players, and it showed as halfbacks Ben Foden and Steve Mylar dominated proceedings, with Foden himself, new at the Saints, having an excellent match.

The three tries shown here were in our view, the best of the match. The first, scored by Joe Ansbro, was sparked by a typical Foden run that tore the defence to pieces before he offloaded to Ansbro in support.

Saints fullback Bruce Reihana worked a piece of magic for the Chris Ashton try, as he himself carved up the Toulon defence then put in the neatest of kicks for Ashton to gather over the line.

The individual try of the match, despite Toulons tired looking players, came from Foden who was in sizzling form as he ran, chipped, and regathered to finish a try that he started 60 meters back.

It was a great away performance by Saints with a few stand out moments of brilliance, but it's early days yet. It's a long European season and this match perhaps shows us that we may see selection experiments and rested players for certain matches being a thing of the norm - resulting in one sided victories such as this. Final score 56-3 to Northampton.

Foden had about 3 mates on either side of him. The chip was totally unnecessary. Only against toulon...

Foden for England? I think he'd be a good choice for fullback, seeing as though we dont really have anyone in that position at the moment, problem is he wont get game time there for his club and he'll find it hard to challenge Care and Ellis for scrumhalf...

did sean lamont score?i also think that Foden or Care at no9 with cipriani at 10 would be an extremely effective pairing.

Toulon's main focus right now, from what I've heard, is not the European Challenge Cup. It means nothing to them, and the Top 14 is more important. That could explain this result a little, and team selections. SBW injured still I think.. and Collins rested I guess. Foden was scrumhalf btw for whoever asked.

Truth is if Toulon could withdraw from the comp they would. Their only goal this season is to be safely in T14 next year. That's why they put a light line up.

The thing is, Foden is the best fullback in England today, regardless of whether they play him there or not.Seeing him play at Sale all of last year made it worth the season ticket I had.The skill he has picked up as a centre half combined with his speed and step is a rare site to watch, he truly was a more than adequate replacement for Jason Robinson. However, the young man got it into his head that he is a true number 9, despite there being no vacancies in the England squad, and a distinct lack of talent at the full back position (Tait has not proved himself at all this year, Rory Lamont is much better).Yes he is good at number 9, but there he cannot usually show his speed, whereas game in game out he could do that at 15 at Sale. He can now only show his true talent against pushover teams like Toulon, and with such a competitive year at the premiership, how will he ever show his true worth?!

Sure, Toulon had a second string team, but let's give Saints some credits...they play a good running game and Foden is great. The game against my home town Montpellier should be interesting! But I'm a little worried.

i cant believe i watched the whole match, the scrumhalf for toulon might have been the worst i've seen. henjak should have atleast been playing it seemed like every toulon ball was turned over in a matter of phases.
